Straubing to Deggendorf

Riding north out of Straubing, I crossed the Donau and proceeded along a farm road between cornfields and the levy. I noticed the the road had all new pavement. When I reached the small town of Reibersdorf, the road was closed. In the distance, I could see construction crews rebuilding the road and reinforcing the levy. The previous year had catastrophic flooding along the river.

Trying to follow the posted detour signs I went down another farm road only to find that it dead-ended in a cornfield. Returning to where I started, I realized the detour required riding north to intersect with a very busy highway. Riding along the highway, that had no bike trail or bike lane, was the scariest 5 km of my entire ride. Fortunately, German drivers are very bicycle conscious and waited until it was safe to pass me. The detour brought me to the town of Oberalteich, which had no bicycle trail noted on my guidebook. I was able to use Google Maps to find a different bike trail to take me to the nearby town of Bogen. In Bogen, I was able find and follow red Donauradweg detour signs as the road and levy construction continued through the town.

After Bogen, the trail followed roads and the part of the levy where reconstruction was complete. Along the top of the levy, concrete retainment walls had been recently built. Approaching Deggendorf, the trail ran atop and along the unimproved levy and was kind of rough. Entering the town, the trail improved and passed along a park. After passing a technical school complex along the park, I turned north on a street that led to my hotel for the night, the Scotty & Paul. The hotel was quite new and modern but I never met Scotty or Paul, only the nice ladies at the reception.

I was going to try a nearby Italian restaurant but, having just had pizza the night before, I opted to buy some food at an Aldi grocery store two blocks away. I could have walked or biked 1 km into the old center of the city but I was quite tired and just ate my Aldi purchase in my room. I did have the hotel's breakfast buffet in the morning.
