Deggendorf to Passau

After collecting my bicycle in the hotel garage, I followed a fellow in his Rolls Royce out the garage door. Even though the hotel was reasonably priced, it still must have some wealthy guests. Leaving Deggendorf, the trail followed a main boulevard and highway, via a bike lane and bike path near the river. The trail then veered away from the river, passing through many cornfields and the town of Nierderalteich before reaching the town of Winzer.

The trail in Winzer was along its narrow main street before, again, more cornfields. Eventually, the trail started following the river along paved and unpaved paths. I stopped for a break along the trail near the bridge that crosses the river to Vilshofen. The trail then left the river for a short distance to pass by the Vilshofen Airfield. After the airfield, the trail continued alongside the river, over paved and unpaved sections, all the way to Passau.

On the outskirts of Passau, the trail crosses the Donau along the Kachlet dam and power station. After the dam, I road through a wooded park area, along the south side of the river to reach my hotel, the Niu, which is now a Holiday Inn. The hotel was still on the outskirts of Passau with about 5 km to go before reaching the Fahrrad Klinik bike shop. Once I washed up, I went down to the hotel bar and had a beer. Later, I walked about 8 blocks to a small Korean noodle stand and ordered some chicken fried noodles and a couple of cokes, which I brought back to my room.

A Rest Day in Passau

I was planning to go to the train station, take a train to Salzburg, and ride around some lakes before returning to Passau the next day to return my rental bike. Upon waking, it was pouring rain (about the only other rainy day of my ride) and I just did not feel like riding in the rain. After having the hotel's breakfast buffet, I went to the front desk and arranged to stay an extra night. After taking a long nap, I woke to find that the weather had cleared and was sunny. I regretted not going to Salzburg but was OK with riding there on a future trip.

For dinner, I walked back to a Rewe grocery store, across the street from the Korean noodle stand. The Rewe had a take-out salad bar so I made a salad, bought some cooked shrimp to add to the salad, and added a jug of blood orange juice and some chips. I brought everything back to the hotel and had dinner while watching BBC News on TV.
