Regensburg to Straubing
I met Greg and Michelle at breakfast and we shared a table. They were taking their bicycle to a repair shop and I was going to continue my riding to the city of Straubing. I left Regensburg via a busy boulevard and then quiet road that ran beside a levy. The trail then ran parallel to the highway past the town of Donaustauf before again running beside a levy.

Walhalla Memorial Near Donaustauf
Just past Donaustauf, I passed the large Walhalla monument. The monument, finished in 1842, looks like the Greek Parthenon and sits on a hillside above the river. It honers many distinguished Germans from history. I planned to push my bike up the steep path to the monument but the path had a sign saying "No Bicycles" and there was no place to lock up my bike. I settled on taking some photos and a video looking up at the structure. The trail followed the highway for a while before becoming a quiet road along the levy and then a road through many cornfields.
Straubing - Stadtturm |
Straubing - Theresienplatz |
After passing through a few more small towns, the trail crossed the Donau over the Straubing power station dam alongside a busy highway. After the dam, one could see the large cathedral and city tower of Straubing in the distance. The trail then became a boulevard running through Straubing. The boulevard led to the large town square, the Teresienplatz, and Stadtturm city tower. After riding my bike through the Teresienplatz, it was time to find my hotel, the Villa Boutique, which was a few blocks to the south near the rail-road station.
The hotel, which consisted of a modern building and its much older annex, was situated along a small stream. My room was on the upper floor of the older annex building and required climbing a very narrow spiral staircase. The room had modern features but a sloped ceiling and exposed rafters so I had to watch my head. The bottom floor of the annex had a nice pizza restaurant. Being tired, I opted for having a pizza there. Breakfast was in the newer building.
