Kelheim to Regensburg

Leaving Kelheim via its main street, I had to navigate through a large street market, which I guess happens on Saturday mornings. At the end of the main street, I passed through a gate under a large clock tower and across a bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the Altmuhl river. Riding a short distance along the Altmuhl, I regained the Donau. The bike trail followed the Donau along a levy and a street with light traffic. The street passed several semi-permanent camping facilities near the town of Kapfelberg.

Just beyond Kapfelberg, the trail crosses to the south side of the Donau via a bridge at Poikam. The trail then passes through the town of Bad Abbach and continues over a series of streets and bike paths along the river. Riding along the river, I stopped at a park bench, across from a large restaurant, for a long rest. Further on, the trail passed under the high bridge of the A3 Autobahn. Approaching Regensburg, the trail passed between the river and the long Donaupark. Entering Regensburg, I passed under the A93 Autobahn and, after a short distance, the Steinerne Brücke, a bridge built in the 1100's and one of the city's main landmarks, appeared.

The Narrow Tandlergasse

Turning south at the Steinerne Brücke, I entered the Innenstadt or town center. As I was an hour early to check in to my hotel, I made my way to the Dom Platz, by the Dom St. Peter cathedral, where I had a beer at one of the many outdoor cafes. After the beer, I set out to find my hotel, the Hotel Münchner Hof. The hotel entrance was on a narrow alley, Tandlergasse, a block away from the Dom Platz.

For dinner that night, I felt like having Italian. I ended up at the Spaghetteria Aquino retaurant which had a mix and match menu of several pastas and sauces. I ordered tagliatelle and chicken with a curry sauce which was very tasty. On the way back to the hotel, I stopped at a gelato cafe for "Spaghetti Eis" with a black cherry sauce.

A Planned Rest Day in Regensburg

This was a planned day to rest up after several days of riding. I used this day to sleep in and wash out my biking clothes after having breakfast at the hotel. The breakfast room was completely full so I sat at the bar and chatted, in German and English, with one of the servers.

Later that day, I went for a walk to explore Regensburg. I crossed the Steinerne Brücke, and walked along the north side of the Donau. It was a beautiful warm day and there were several people swimming in the river. After a distance, I crossed back across the river over another bridge and headed back.

Regensburg - Donau and Steinerne Brücke

On the way back, I stopped at the Historische Wurstkuchl, a historic wurst (sausage) restaurant on the river next to the Steinerne Brücke. The restaurant has been around since the Middle Ages and is said to be the oldest wurst stand in Europe. I started with their Erdapfelsuppe (a potato and root vegetable soup) which was delicious. Next, I had 6 bratwursts with sauerkraut and a beer.

Back at the hotel, I was walking down the hall to my room when a woman called to me. It was Michelle. Michelle, Greg, and I were, again, staying at the same hotel. She said they had some bad luck and had broken the back wheel of their tandem bike on the way to Regensburg. They were able to limp into the city on their damaged bike and planned to go to a bike shop on Monday to get the wheel fixed. I wished them luck on the rest of their trip.
