Ehingen to Neu Ulm
The ride to Neu Ulm was the shortest of the trip, only about 40 km. This was planned as I hoped to stop at the Donaubad hot spring spa, in Neu Ulm, before going on to my hotel. After Ehingen, the trail flattened out. As would happen several times on my ride, the trail would veer away from the river and I would find myself riding through corn fields. The trail passed a few ponds as it made its way back to the river. Riding along the river, I soon started to enter Neu Ulm, which is on the south bank of the river. The city of Ulm is directly across the river on its north bank.

Entering Neu Ulm, I came upon the Donaubad spa. The spa had many racks for bicycles so I locked up the bike and took my backpack and panniers to the reception desk. After buying a ticket (actually a device that looked like a wristwatch to open gates and purchase food), I was directed to go upstairs to the sauna area and its lockers. I enjoyed the pools and saunas at the Donaubad for about 4 hours before riding another 0.5 km to my hotel. While at the Donaubad, I had a very popular German comfort food for dinner, Currywurst mit Pommes (a large hot dog, smothered in a mixture of catsup and curry powder with a side of French fries).
While most of my hotels were either very new or in very old buildings, my hotel in Neu Ulm, the Plaza Premium, looked straight out of the 1970's, at least from the outside. Inside, the rooms were all remodelled and very modern. On the wall of the room was a huge picture of Albert Einstein with bug eyes that would have scared the hell out of small children. I lived with it.
